School Braillist Job Summary:

The School Braillist provides Braille transcription and instructional support to ensure students who are blind or visually impaired have equal access to educational materials. The Braillist collaborates with Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments (TVIs), classroom teachers, and other educational staff to prepare, adapt, and produce instructional materials in Braille and tactile formats while maintaining accuracy, confidentiality, and compliance with educational standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Transcribe textbooks, classroom materials, tests, worksheets, and other educational documents into Unified English Braille (UEB).
• Produce tactile graphics and adapted instructional materials to support student learning.
• Proofread Braille materials to ensure accuracy and quality.
• Collaborate with TVIs, general education teachers, and special education staff to prioritize and prepare accessible materials.
• Operate and maintain Braille production equipment, including embossers, Braille translation software, and tactile graphic tools.
• Prepare materials in a timely manner to ensure students receive accessible instructional content concurrently with their peers.
• Maintain organized records of transcription requests and completed materials.
• Assist with the distribution and inventory of Braille textbooks and specialized instructional materials.
• Stay current with changes in Braille codes, accessibility standards, and assistive technology.
• Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with federal, state, and district policies.
• Participate in professional development and training related to Braille transcription and visual impairment services.

Job Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree or higher preferred.
• Certification in Unified English Braille (UEB) transcription preferred (such as National Library Service (NLS) Literary Braille Transcriber Certification or equivalent).
• Experience transcribing educational materials into Braille preferred.
• Experience working with students who are blind or visually impaired is desirable.
• Proficiency with Braille translation software and Braille embossing equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of Unified English Braille (UEB) rules and formatting.
• Ability to accurately transcribe print materials into Braille.
• Knowledge of tactile graphic production techniques.
• Strong attention to detail and proofreading skills.
• Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
• Effective communication and collaboration skills.
• Ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to sit for extended periods while using computers and specialized transcription equipment.
• Ability to lift and carry boxes of textbooks and Braille materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
• Manual dexterity to operate Braille embossers and related equipment.

Work Environment:

• School district office, resource center, or school setting.
• Work involves the use of computers, Braille translation software, embossers, and other adaptive technology.
• Standard school-year schedule with occasional additional hours to meet production deadlines.
